The notion of sympoiesis was conceptualized as a contrast to autopoiesis and to deal with the boundaryless nature of systems such as ecosystems.

I often call forward the depth and silence of a west coast temperate rainforest to begin explanation of sympoiesis. In doing so, I simultaneously point to my own beginnings - tempered by forests, mountains, ocean, even though I grew up in the city - and to the perceptual/conceptual merging of theory-experience. Yet the confluence of factors leading to articulation of "sympoiesis" included this city influence as well as - perhaps even primarily - my own (inate?) way of thinking, my sense of the way things 'should' be - and a dictionary.
My own understanding of sympoiesis has changed over time. For example, with respect to the notion of boundaries, I originally placed littel emphasis on the notion of boundarylessness. Now, it is central to the concept. I have noted that if boundaries are drawn, then one is no longer conceptualizing a sympoietic system.
